Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is one of the most effective treatments for depression and has been approved by the FDA since 2008. It is a safe, non-invasive, brain stimulation therapy that has been shown to be effective in medication-resistant depression. TMS is a brief, outpatient procedure that involves using an MRI-strength magnet to produce electromagnetic pulses that stimulate an area of the brain believed to be underactive and responsible for causing the symptoms of depression. NeuroStar TMS Therapy® is a short outpatient procedure performed right in a psychiatrist’s office while you are awake. Treatment takes 19 minutes per day, 5 days a week for 6 weeks. Treatment time can vary depending on your treatment protocol which is decided by you and your provider.
TMS is NOT recommended for individuals who are pregnant, have certain seizure disorders, or if there is the presence of conductive ferromagnetic or other magnetic -sensitive metals implanted in the head. Examples include: cochlear implants, stents, bullet fragments, implanted electrodes/stimulators or aneurysm clips. TMS is covered by most insurance (excluding Medicaid).
